Our Keys to the Cities event won the Bernays Award for Best Special Event in South Florida!  Local artists were chosen to paint old pianos and turn them into “playable” works of art. They were displayed around the county from Jupiter to Delray and everyone was encouraged to play them!  They were located in unlikely places:  parks, public spaces, local businesses and even on the waterfront.

Kathi Kretzer of Kretzer Piano in Jupiter developed the local initiative after learning of similar projects in London and New York City.  The Kretzer Piano Music Foundation presented this colorful event, bringing attention to the mission of the foundation which is to provide music lessons and performing opportunities to everyone, especially underprivileged children.

Eighteen used baby grand and upright pianos were donated by the Kretzer Piano Music Foundation and local residents. Professional pianists and music groups volunteered to perform scheduled concerts on the pianos during the two week period. After their public debut the pianos were donated to local children’s charities and community organizations, enriching lives for years to come.
